Shutter Speed - JBIRD

The shutter speed, also called the exposure time, is the length of time that a camera's shutter is open. Along with the aperture, the shutter speed determines the amount of light that reaches the film. You want to use a longer shutter speed when taking a picture with less light and just the opposite when taking a picture with a lot of light. Shutter speeds usually range from 1/1000 of a second to 4 seconds. The shutter speed can add artistic affects to pictures. The photo above exemplifies this. The wind mill on the left was taken with a fast shutter speed. The photo on the right was taken with a much longer shutter speed.
