Photographic processing through use of chemicals transforms the latent image into a visible image, making a permanent image insensitive to light. In this process, film is soaked in water in order to swell the gelatin layer. The image is then converted to metallic silver. A stop bath, a solution of acetic acid or citric acid, is used next, or water can often be used if the developer wishes. The fixer makes the image forever permanent and light-resistant by dissolving silver halide salts.
