Martin Parr is a British photographer who specializes in taking photos of every day life and trying to expose the frivolity and preposterousness of life. He believes that currently, in modern day, people only see boredom and banality and people have a lack of meaning.
I think this photo represents Parr's goals as a photographer. The scene is clearly a wedding or party of sorts and the guests seem to be incredibly bored. The woman with the purple hat looks completely disinterested in her surroundings and her mind seems to be elsewhere. She is not amused by the party or by the woman in the foreground in the pink dress who Parr seems to be mostly focusing on. The woman is wearing a tight and unflattering dress and there is a visible drink stain by her bellybutton. To an outsider, this is comical - the woman is trying so hard to be regal and elegant but she is in fact awkward and looks uncomfortable. The two women seem to be almost opposites, the woman in pink trying to enjoy the party while making a fool of herself and the woman in purple not enjoying the party but remains in tact.
