Depth of Field refers to the space between the objects closet and furthest from the shot. The decrease in sharpness is gradual on both sides of the shot. One of the objects appears more sharply than the either in order to create a dramatic contrast. An adequate selection of depth of field is subjective- each photographer can choose his/her DOF as they please. A shallow depth of field is one in which the main object in focus is enhanced by blurring the surrounding objects. Extended depth of field is one in which the object furthest away is in focus, while near objects are not enhanced (as seen in this photo). Factors directly related to the DOF include the diaphragm opening of the lens, the focal length of the lens in use, and the image size.
