Film Structure

Photos form from light reflecting off the surface that is being photographed. Film is made up of various layers which all have a different purpose: the gelatin layer protects from scratches, the emulsion layer which takes up the light, substrate layer which adds adhesion to the emulsion, and a film base. Roll film can be added in the daylight without exposing all the film but once it is in the camera, cannot be exposed to light or else the film would be ruined. This film is coated with a light-tight backing layer.
