Darkroom Procedure and Chemicals (by HCM)

Developing Times:

Ilford HP5 400= 6:30 minutes

Kodak TM 400= 6:00 minutes

Developing Temperature:

20°C 

Film Developer: 

50ml of DEVELOPER and 450ml WATER

(1 part SOLUTION: 9 parts WATER)

*** CAN ONLY BE USED ONCE***

Fixer:
100 ml of FIXER and 400ml WATER
(1 part SOLUTION: 4 parts WATER)
*** CAN BE USED MULTIPLE TIMES***

STEPS:

Step 1: Lay out all the tools in front of you: film cassette, film reel, tank and cover. 

Step 2: IN DARKNESS,  remove the film from the cassette and wind the film around the reel (as shown in class). Once at the end of the film, cut off the cassette.

Step 3: Place the loaded reel into the film tank, as demonstrated in class. 

Step 4: Pour the DEVELOPER & water solution into the film tank. Swirl and turn tank upside down once every 30 seconds for the FULL developing time (see above). When the tank is upright, tap the tank against the table to remove bubbles. Pour out the developer. 

Step 5: Add clean WATER. Shake the tank for 30 seconds, keeping it upright. This will stop the development. Drain the water. 

Step 6: Add the FIXER & water solution. Swirl the tank continuously for 30 seconds, slam it against the table to release bubbles, and let it rest for 15 seconds; repeat for 3:30 minutes. Pour out the fixer. 

Step 7:  Add CLEAN WATER to wash off the fixer. Swirl water for 30 seconds, change water and repeat. 

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

***DO NOT CROSS-CONTAMINATE***
YELLOW: Developer
GREEN: Water
BLUE: Fixer

NO NOT TURN ON THE LIGHTS!!!
