Personal experience and opinion:
These past few weeks have been my first experience with printing film photography. I thought that it was going to be a somewhat simple process, but it was not. There are many different components that collide together to create the perfect print: the filter, aperture and time. Making sure that each of these is at the right setting can be a time consuming process. And it differs with every picture that you want to print. Once you have figured out all of your settings and have printed the picture to the paper, you have to put it first in developer, water and fixture, just as you would when you develop your role of film. The longer you leave it in the developer, the clearer your picture will turn out. After you place it in the water before leaving it in the fixture for a minute or 2. When this process is done, you should leave your picture in running water to ensure that all the fixture gets washed off. This is basically the end of the printing process, and all thats left to do is hang your picture up to dry and admire what you have created!

Before & Afters (KMD)
While scanning my negatives, I noticed that there are similarities in the shapes and compositions of the photos in each set. In the first set, the lines of the placemat and the angle of the fork are similar to the edge of the monument. In the second set, the second picture the main focus is in the center of the photo.

Film Photography
Using a film camera is very different from using any of the new digital cameras popular today. Most film cameras are manually operated which means you set your own diaphram, shutter speed, ISO ect. In this film photography class I have learned how to do all of these things, and how to develop my own film. Before you take a picture you have to take many things into consideration. First, the lighting which may depend on the weather or if you are inside or outside. The shutter speed or exposure together with the diaphragm control the amount of light that enters your camera. In most cases you will want a faster shutter speed in order to "freeze" a moment in time. However a certain blur may be preferred if you want to specify a movement. Another aspect that you should consider are your lenses. The two most prominent types are the wide angle lens versus longer lenses. A wide angle lens captures the subject more fully from far away and magnifies the distance between objects while allowing for a greater depth of field. Long lenses are better for close up shots, a typical characteristic of a long lens is the blur of the foreground or background, whichever is not the focus of the picture. To put it simply, film photography requires much more thought than digital photography.

STANDARD LENS: A standard lens is a lens that reproduces perspective that looks natural to the human eye, under normal viewing conditions. They have focal lengths about equal to the diagonal size of the film or sensor format. A 50mm lens would be a standard lens for a 35mm camera. This lens has a variety of uses, which can include portrait photography.


TELEPHOTO LENS: A telephoto lens is a type of long-focus lens where the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length. Generally, it is any lens with a focal length over 50mm. Used for close-up photography of objects, people or animals; the telephoto allos you to get optically close to a subject when you cannot be physically close.


WIDE ANGLE LENS: A wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is shorter than the focal length of a normal lens; any focal length under 50mm. The lens distorts the perspective due to the distance at which the picture is taken. Often used for landscape photography.

With film cameras, one of the things you know is how to load film. To put in my camera, you use the dial on the top left and pull upwards which opens the door on the back of the camera. Once this back pops open, you place the film in the little holder on the left with the flat part towards the bottom of the camera. You push the dial down so it locks the film in place. You pull the film towards the right side of the camera and let the holes on the side of the camera catch on the reel on the side. Once it catches, you 'take' a few pictures to make sure the film is rolling up properly until it reads '1'.

When the aperture is small, it doesn't let in as much light so you use a slower shutter speed. The 'B' shutter speed allows you to take the picture for as long as you want. Each speed is a fraction of a second so the setting 1000 is actually 1/1000 of a second.

My knowledge regarding film photography
The first I learned about the camera was how to load film. On my camera I pull up the button and the back pops open. I insert the film and pull the negative into the tab and then I am ready to shoot. When taking a picture you want the speed to match the film speed. 400 is an average speed and 200 is better for outside. The speed refers to long the shutter stays open and how much light is let in. Then you focus the camera and take your picture. The process may seem difficult but in time it becomes second nature.

A diaphragm is a round device on the face of the camera. The function is to make sure the light only comes in through the aperture. The diaphragm shuts out all other light so the picture is not over exposed. The aperture is the opening at the end of the diaphragm. This controls the amount of light that can enter the camera. Apertures range from settings 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, and 22. Larger aperture settings, ranging from around f3.0 to f5.5, allow more light to enter through the lens. Smaller apertures range from f16 to f32. The shutter speed controls the length of time the shutter is open and the amount of light is allowed in the lens. A longer shutter will cause the moving object to be blurry. A shorter shutter speed allows you to take a sharp picture of a moving object. The depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears sharp. It is the distance between the nearest and farthest object in a scene. The depth of field becomes greater with smaller apertures. Depth of field decreases the shorter the focusing distance. The focus rings is on the lens, and puts in the image in and out of focus. The ISO is a measure of films sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO number, the more grain is visible on the film. ISO 100 or 200 film speeds are best for bright lighting conditions and outdoor photography. ISO 400 film speed is the standard, and can be used for most situations. A normal lens, which is 50 mm, about is a view that looks natural to the observer. A wide-angle lens, which is below 50mm, stretches the perspective. Wide angle means that you can fit a lot of stuff into the image. A telephoto lens, which is above 50mm, has a narrow angle of view and causes nearby objects to appear similar in size compared to far away objects.
